My One and Only Selfie

There’s an outbreak of selfie-itis going on so be prepared.

I’ve noticed when I’m around young people lately that selfies are the BIG thing. And although I don’t personally want to put myself on “film” much, if ever, I guess they get a lot of enjoyment from these mega many self taken-of-self photos.

My question is…are these selfies taken for self?

I mean are they mainly for your collection of YOU?

Or are they more about sharing yourself with selfless devotion to others?

I mean, is there someone or more than someone who wants to see you so many times and so up close? Because I’ve noticed that the majority of selfies I’ve seen taken or have seen otherwise don’t seem to show anything besides the self in question.

So I don’t think it’s really so much about “see myself” here and here and there but, more like, “here’s me again.”

“See me!? And see me again. And, here I am. And, this is me.”

Maybe your mom or significant other relishes in your selfie collection.

I don’t know. Maybe I’m missing something…or I just don’t get it. It seems, well, self-involved.

To me, it seems like a lot of people are worried about how they look and are looking at themselves a lot of the time too. It seems like the selfie is a little of a selfish pastime.

Selfie-itis Up Close

I was around a group of twenty-somethings not long ago and it seemed like it was hard for them to tear themselves from their selfie-taking (over and over) to notice anybody or anything around them.

It felt lonely in the social group while the selfie took priority. They (the selfie-takers) were very busy snapping away and primping and snapping again. No time to talk with other human beings I guess.

And the surroundings that day were rather beautiful and worth taking in I thought but the self-absorbed selfie-takers missed that beauty…beyond their own face…all day!

Then again, self-promotion, which seems a sister to the selfie generation, has made more than one career in our time. Maybe it’s the still version of Reality TV starring, of course, the one and only ME.

And it’s cousin is probably twitter…” tell me everything you are doing, no matter how mundane, all the time”…all-me-all-the-time media. Hmmm…

It’s used in business too…social media promotion, all the rage…even if the writing and blogs, posts, etc. are…here we go again, self-promoting. It seems to work. It’s commerce today, right?

But…I don’t know…seems like there’s a couple of things missing in our text it, selfie share, Utube, interactive world.

Like interaction with actual people.

Like speaking to others sometimes.

Like seeing things around you, LIVE in the world, instead of just staring at your phone screen or taking your own picture.

Like witnessing sun, and stars, and rain, and dancing in a sweaty crowd of actual, real people.

I’m probably old-fashion in my view but, I’m not sure that I ever loved myself that much!
